A eulogy to Robert Hartop who died on 31st July 2007
Robert Hartop who died on 31st July 2007
Robert Hartop

As you will all know, Robert Hartop, known to us all as Bob, passed away on Tuesday, 31st July 2007. His cremation ceremy occurred at 10:30 am at Cheltenham Crematorium on Friday, 10th August, followed by a memorial service, celebrating Bob's life, at St Michael's Church, Dowdeswell at 11:30 am. All were then invited to back to Soundborough, the estate of Hon. Mr I Wills, for refreshments, where Bob lived with his wife Alison and their family.

A very large congregation of family and friends from the world of hunting and racing, packed the church and the church yard to celebrate Bob's full and rich life.

For those of you unable to make the service, I have been asked by Bob's family to share with you the eulogy delivered by the Hon. Mrs Vestey MFH which describes the respect and standing in which Bob was held by us all.

Kate has just spoken very eloquently about Bob’s life.  I am honoured that Ali has asked me to talk about Bob’s Hunting Life, particularly his life with the Cotswold.

Bob’s death on Tuesday night came as a profound & devastating shock to all of us.  Our hearts go out to you, Ali, and your family, as we his friends, struggle to come to terms with just what we have lost.  But we are here to remember & celebrate the life of a fine & exceptional Sportsman, & there is much to be thankful for.

Bob was brought up in a Hunting household.  His father was Master of the Aldenham Harriers in the ‘50s.  He fostered & encouraged Bob’s love of Hunting & at Radley he took on the Beagles hunting them from 1966 – 67.  His love of Beagling lived on after he left school & The Dummer tell of how he helped & supported them whenever he could.

When Bob & Ali left Nottingham, they came back to live in the Cotswold country, joining the Soundborough ‘family’, immediately involving himself, Ali & his children with the Hunt.

Bob participated in every aspect of Hunt life but I will begin with perhaps his greatest achievement, when 10 years ago he came to the rescue of the Cotswold Point to Point by agreeing to take on the job of Clerk of the Course & Course Builder.  George Dowty reminded me that with Jockey Club Rules & Regulations becoming more onerous year on year & Health & Safety an increasing issue, we were lucky to enlist the services of someone as experienced & knowledgeable as Bob.

Bob took a pretty unprepossessing venue, with not a brilliant reputation for its’ going, & through sheer determination & hard work turned it into a course that would not have looked out of place in the NH calendar, setting the standard for point to pointing in our region & beyond.  Bob had a real talent for preparing a course & organising a race meeting & as the professional he was, he went about his business with the minimum of fuss.  After each meting he received many compliments from The Jockey Club Official Report, from Stewards, Trainers, Owners & Jockeys.  Bob was very well respected by all.

Bob was initially not in favour of Pony Racing – not quite an ”over my dead body” approach, but close.  George & Gill assumed that whilst Bob remained firmly opposed to ‘lots of small people on ponies roaring all over my pt to pt course’ there would be no Pony Racing at Andoversford.  Last summer, however, he must have had a ‘road to Damascus’ moment. He rang Gill Abbatt saying, quite out of the blue, that the Course Inspector had been up & they thought he could manage a 4 furlong drag up the hill.

It was then Gill’s turn to say ‘Oh God, not children & worse still, not their mothers!’  But Bob made it happen.  He stuck his neck out, & against Jockey Club advice, asserted that they would run before the main meeting, determined that the children would not be consigned to the end of the card, waiting around in the cold.  It was a resounding success & many others took his lead as a result.

Bob was elected onto the CHSC as a committee member in 1994.  Due to various ‘cabinet reshuffles’ he became Membership Secretary in 1996, Treasurer in 1998 & Chairman in 2002.  Under his Chairmanship the club flourished.  He was tireless in his efforts to ensure everyone was involved, informed & entertained and also that they paid up!  Bob was nothing if not tenacious – a few years ago, when hot on the trail of lapsed Supporters Club members, he rang my brother in law Sam, chasing him for his sub, at that time all of £2.50.  Sam, efficient & generous to a fault, jumped to, thinking he was on about the HUNT SUB.  Bob was shortly in receipt of £1500 – the equivalent of 600 memberships!

His responsibilities in the Supporter’s Club were legion – one was the Fun Ride, when Bob & our Hunt Chairman, Chris Adams would liaise on card & templates for signs & arrows, along with specialised spray paint.  Last year Bob had other ideas & thought he would save money by using sheep marker spray instead – one shower of rain & all arrows were fuzzy blobs & all helper’s hands red for 12 months!  The Hunt Breakfasts, when he was ably assisted by Ali, his Mother-in-law Ann & their fantastic team, were famous, & as good a breakfast as you could get anywhere on the Planet.

Bob was good at most things, but he was not good at delegating.  He was so able & efficient that I know he often felt it would be quicker to do it himself.  On a visit to Soundborough, Sophie & I were talking to Ian Wills about Bob, he looked me straight in the eye & said ‘Bob works too hard, be careful of what you ask him to do’.  Well perhaps he did work too hard, but I don’t think he would have had it any other way. He was not a fan of formal Committee meetings, he just liked getting on with the job, but if you HAVE ever sat in a Meeting with Bob, you will know that he was a truly inspired and helpful Committee member – never short of comments, always measured and positive, cutting through the waffle to get to the point.  We know he didn’t suffer fools at all gladly, but he absolutely personified the phrase ‘constructive criticism’.

I regard the Cotswold Hunt as a big family.  Like all families we have our tensions & our problems but are fundamentally linked by a common bond.  Bob was at the very centre of that family, a patriarchal figure of great influence and ability.  Change is never easy.  When I was taking over as Joint Master I went to see Bob, he listened carefully to what I had to say, voiced his criticism & reservations with honesty & understanding & then never wavered in his support for the new Mastership.  Dominic, Sophie, Sarah & I needed that support badly, benefiting hugely from his experience and wise council.

Bob was special – a man of stature & presence, held in high regard by all who knew him, much loved & respected for his strength, his wisdom, & his huge personality.  He was, as we know, nobody’s ‘yes’ man.  He could be very direct – but he was always fair & straight.   He knew a huge amount about hunting & had a deep understanding of every aspect of our Sport.

Ali supported his passion to the full & she told me this story with a wry smile.  The tyres on their car were bald, literally to the wire, & she had been asking for new ones for three weeks.  Bob had been so franticly busy with work & Cotswold Hunt commitments that he just hadn’t found the time.  One day they were driving past the Tyre shop in Cheltenham when she had a brain wave.  She said to him, “ I think I’ll phone Fiona Russel-Brown & ask HER if I can get my car booked in”.  She had her tyres the next day!

It didn’t matter how busy Bob was, if he possibly could he came out on a hunting day.   He was assiduous in collecting the caps from the car followers, always coming to the meet, even if he didn’t have time to follow.  Ali told me that sometimes he would get up at four in the morning to sort the suits in the barn, then worked late into the night, just so he could go hunting.

I first really got to know Bob well when Gemma came, as a child of 13, to work with Tamara’s polo ponies at Cabin Farm.  T had just started out on her own, & as you would imagine for a daughter of Bob & Ali, Gemma was, in spite of her youth, an invaluable help.  They became firm friends & Gemma stayed for 5 years.  Tamara always told me how proud Bob was of Gemma & indeed of Richard, who was a natural at driving a tractor & as soon as he was old enough, Bob had roped him in to help pull the lorries out of the mud for me at the Team Chase. When I told Tamara that Bob had died, she said, “Oh Mum, Bob was a LEGEND”.  That seemed to say it all.

The Hunt have lost an invaluable friend.   Almost everyone I have spoken to has said ‘I just don’t know how we will manage without him’.  But manage we will – we must.  He would have expected it.

As we all know, God approves of hunting & loves hunting people.  Up there, in the Elysian Fields, where hunting is legal, & where beautiful and bushy-tailed foxes abound, Bob will have been made very welcome.  He will have paid his Sub a thousand times over, he will be Clerk of the Heavenly Point to Point Course & Chairman of the Celestial Supporter’s Club, smoking will be a pleasure, not a sin & everyone will be beautifully dressed in their Formal Attire.  When we join him, to hunt in a better place, rest assured, everything will be in very good order.

Under that efficient & sometimes abrupt exterior lay one of the kindest hearts & most generous souls that it has been my privilege to know.  He will be so greatly missed.

CHSC Spring Quiz Night

Cotswold Hunt Supporters Club Spring Quiz Night

The Supporters Club held their annual quiz night at Chedworth Village Hall on Wednesday, 21st February 2007. As usual it was well attended with 19 teams taking part.

The questions were, for the third year running, set by Tace Allen who is getting a dab hand at this and she produced a variety of topics and general knowledge. The majority of the questions were considered very fair with a few more testing ones to sort out the leaders. This was borne out by the fact that all the teams scored over 50%. Bob was the quizmaster and Ros did the hardest job of all - keeping the scores!

The half time break saw a superb supper produced by Doki, ably assisted in the kitchen by Sue, Richard and Martha. Whilst the contestants were enjoying their supper, Harvey & Chris cajoled them into buying raffle tickets and did really well by taking over £200. Our thanks go to those who donated prizes.

In the end, it was a very close contest and the winners were Ever Hopeful Reserves made up of Clare & John Williams & Helen & Neil Kane with 83.5points. Second place spot was shared between Monkey Shots and Sex Terriers with 83 points and third was The Undecided with 78.5 points.

The whole evening was held in a relaxed atmosphere with excellent food, and to my knowledge, throroughly enjoyed by all even the team that came last! My thanks go to all those who made this possible and early figures from our Treasurer suggest that over £650 was raised on the night for Club funds.

Cotswold Hunt Racing Syndicate Details

Proposed Cotswold Hunt Racing Syndicate with Kim Bailey

We are planning to set up a Cotswold Hunt Racing Syndicate for the next National Hunt season (October 2007). The plan would be to purchase a Jump horse(s) in May to be trained at Thorndale Farm, Withington by Kim Bailey.

For each of the syndicates we are budgeting £20,000 for the purchase of the horse along with £20,000 for all-inclusive running costs for the season. After the first season members have the option to sell their share or remain involved.

The syndicates will be run under the Cotswold Hunt banner, with the hunt livery being used within the colours. Also the partnerships will donate 10% of prize-money to the Cotswold Hunt.

The syndicates will be professionally managed by Tom Gittins who will handle all administration along with organising raceday badges, stable visits and social events.

We would like to gauge the interest in the partnership, without obligation, and would really appreciate it if you could fill in the questionnaire - see link below. If you have any other friends / families who you think would like to get involved, please feel free to pass on details - these syndicates are not restricted to just hunt subscribers.

We will randomly pick one completed questionnaire (return by 16th April) to win a bottle of champagne!

Sign the Petition for the repeal of the Hunting Act

Petition the PM for the repeal of the Hunting Act

The Prime Minister's Office has launched a new initiative on the Number 10 website that allows people “to set up, host and sign petitions about the issues that matter to them most - and have them automatically delivered to the PM's office”.

Nick Onslow (of Action for Hunting fame) has helpfully lodged a petition to run for one year calling for the ‘repeal of the Hunting Act’ so please add your name to the list and ensure that the Prime Minister is reminded of the opposition to the most ridiculous legislation of his premiership.

Please see http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/huntingactrepeal/ for more details.

Sunday 3rd September 2006 - Countryside Car Boot Sale

Sarah Stafford & Beckie Tarling organized a successful Car Boot Sale on the Edmund`s field, the hunt is very fortune to be given such an excellent site so near the A40. Thanks go to Sue & Jane for letting the us use the field.

Despite a poor weather forecast and the signs being blown down, many vendors came with cars full of a variety interesting items for sale. It was a shame not more not more people turned up as they missed some good bargains and delicious bacon butties made by Dokie Pool.

Report from the Hunt Supper at the Bathurst Arms, North Cerney - 21st Aug 2006

Monday 21st August 2006 - Pub Supper at The Bathurst Arms, North Cerney

James, the landlord, came up trumps by managing to squeeze 52 supporters into the dining room by some creative table moving. There were nine more supporters than anticipated and our largest gathering to date.

The noise level would probably have exceeded Health & Safety standards however the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.The food was excellent and James and his staff coped very well under pressure. 'Challenging!' was his word to describe the evening.

If you haven't experienced one of these evenings I would suggest you come along and enjoy! However remember to book in, as, if the popularity continues to grow, numbers might have to be restricted when visiting the smaller country pubs although, hopefully, this can be avoided.

Remember the next supper is on Monday 2nd October at the Highwayman following the CHSC's AGM see the Diary page for more details.

CA Award for Ann Chaffers

June 2006 - Countryside Alliance Award for Ann Chaffers

The Countryside Alliance AGM was held in Westminster in June and several awards  were made at the meeting to people who had helped "above and beyond" to further the aims of the Alliance. One of these was the Welchman Award which was shared between Les Webber and our own Ann Chaffers.

Ann joined the BFFS in the 1940s and has been a tireless worker ever since, most notably when she headed the "Action Group" for our Hunt in its very busiest period. Whipping us all in to the many Marches and gatherings was only a part of the huge amount of work she took on at this vital time. Typically modest, she praised the team and Nicky Driver, saying she was accepting the award for them all.

CHSC Summer Ball

Friday 30th June 2006 CHSC Dirty Duster Ball - Kitehill Barn Notgrove

A tremendously successful evening and an event enjoyed by all. Over 230 people attended the ball on one of the hottest evenings we have seen for many years.

The guests were treated to some fine home produced food which served to equip them well for many hours dancing which followed!

If we receive any photos of the ball then we will post them to the website without delay! If anyone has any then please contact the webmaster.

If anyone did find a piece of jewellery during the ball (square shaped, centred by a green stone and surrounded by pearl type beads) could they please contact Bob Hartop on 01242 820812.

A message from the Chairman

Wednesday 26th May 2006 - A message from the Chairman

May the 1st has come and gone and our new Mastership is now in office and they have got off to a flying start with their new team at the Kennels in place and a raft of innovative and exciting plans for the future.

Building on the solid foundations we have laid in the first post-Ban season it is now time to edge forward and raise our game as the dust settles and we must inch carefully but deliberately ever nearer to normality.

This is a stage that will need subtlety, ingenuity, and careful planning as we (and the whole hunting community) sail ever closer to the wind utilizing all the exemptions within the act but importantly still within the law. We must be creative and robust but not reckless.

So let us all look forward to the summer events, meeting the new Masters and Staff and never forget what could have been post-Ban and always reflect on what we have maintained and what we will reinstate.

We can only go forward from here and I know the Masters and the Kennels Team are as dedicated and as enthusiastic about the future as it is possible to be and relish the challenges ahead that will be met with energy and optimism.

Saturday, 20th May 2006 -  Keepers Clay Shoot

This Annual event was held at Chatcombe Estate Shooting School. It was a 40 bird competition, (4 traps, 10 clays on each). There was also  a pool shoot

Fortunately the afternoon stayed dry and twenty four  people took part of which fifteen were keepers or underkeepers.

The winner of the CHSC Clay Shooting Shield, which had been found last year and had subsequently been engraved up to date, was won after a shoot off by Paul Tudge who beat Chris Hughes . They both had scores of 32. Richard Timbrell also shot a round of 32 but, sportingly, declined to take part in the shoot off as he had won the trophy last year and wanted a 'fresh face' to take the honours.

The Ladies section consisted of two entrants and the winner was Heather Bowen (25) beating Charlotte Dennis (24 ) so winning by one clay.  One Junior took part and Charlie Gilder score of 11 took the prize.  The Best  Round of the day which also received a prize was Nick Hall with a round of 33. The prizes were presented by Mr Dominic  Jones, one of our four new Joint Masters.

Bob Hartop, our Chairman, thanked the keepers for coming and he also thanked Jim French together with Lee for setting this competition. He also thanked all Jim's other helpers on the day. He paid tribute to his committee members especially Sue and  Daf who had manned the barbecue all afternoon. He thanked Harvey and Dan for organizing the event and contacting the keepers especially as the venue had had  to be moved at short notice. It is hoped to repeat the event there again next year.

Wednesday 26th April 2006 - Presentation Evening for the retiring Masters and Hunt Staff at the Frogmill Inn

Just under one hundred members came to The Frogmill Inn to enjoy canapes and to see presentations made by Bob Hartop, our Chairman. The Club gave to Bob Cooper and Biddy Brickell a set of decanters with a silver collar engraved CHSC, to Sophie George, a wine decanter similarly engraved. James Bradley received a hip flask and Chris Cardall a leather 'calf' bar set.

Bob thanked the Hunt Staff for their efforts during the season under difficult conditions and wished them both well in their new jobs. Chris is going as huntsman to the Sparkford and Blackmore Vale in Dorset and James is moving next door to the VWH as first whipper-in.  He also thanked the Masters for all their hard work over the past seven years and for helping to get the Hunt back on to a sound financial footing.  The Masters, in turn, thanked the Club for their presents and for all the fund raising done which enabled the Hunt  to purchase capital items such as flesh truck and quad bike more easily.

PS. If any member feels that they would have liked to have made a donation towards the presentation gifts given on their behalf by the Club, it is still not too late! Cheques (up to £20)  payable to CHSC and marked on the back 'presentation' can be sent to our Treasurer, Kate Russell.
